God's Radio

Ditto everything I said about the radio a few days ago for church.

341 hymns in the book ÷ 52 sundays a year = at least 6 original songs per week. (Can God get tired of "The Spirit of God"?)

Also: I dislike how we all seem to think "We Thank the O God For a Prophet" is a song to the prophet on account of that first line. I get the feeling people think that "his goodness and mercy" is the prophet's, not God's.

I've always thought of "We Thank Thee, O God, For a Prophet" as a threat to non-believers masked by a cheerful melody. "The wicked who fight against Zion will surely be smitten at last." Yikes. Way to stick it to 'em, pioneers!

Everyone likes to talk about their favorite hymns, but what about least favorite? It's dirty business, I know, but let's be honest, "I Stand All Amazed" is a way overrated song. It always drags, it's overplayed, it's clunky with a tint of melodic melodrama. Sorry, sports fans, I know it's a favorite. Also, and I know this is just personal preference, I don't like the "sunshine" hymns. I just don't feel worshipful when I'm singing them, I feel like I'm at summer camp. Give me minor notes, half steps, lots of Jesus, a shake of solemnity, and just a touch of sorrow. I want church to be like a friendly punch to the gut, not like three hours with a motivational speaker.

I don't like "I Believe in Christ." Please refrain from trashing my house. I just don't like the melody.

I get unfortunately distracted by Hymns - the music, the people singing around me, the harmonies, etc.

I try really hard to stay focused on the words and the meanings, but am usually too into the music.

You should come visit. Are you very familiar with Austin or have particular things you're wanting to do?

Not sure how that posted twice.

Not sure how that posted twice.

Maybe I just like to drive my points home with repetition.

Maybe I just . . . nah.
